Overall... do you think facebook is detrimental to society or is it productive.

Because of all the productivity losses at work and schools, I'd say it is very detrimental to society, however I can also understand that it is used as a communications tool for a very limited few.

Mostly, you get 2033942 invitations to stupid things that you need to spend 8 hours declining (spyware) and its just stupid.

I use it to communicate with members of my family (mostly in NJ) and my friends from my old school. I find it useful in that sense.

I use it as a passive tool. I don't actively use it, but if someone pings me with something I can respond, and I can keep in touch with people I don't see often or ever, like seniors or friends from the summer. I think that 99% of the applications on the platform are useless crap, but I just don't use them, so it isn't a problem.
